Potential Homework Assignments

This site is a collaboration of a three students at the University of Washington-Bothell that are enrolled in BIS 402 Modern China in the Spring of 2010. This site was was created to complement a presentation that will be given to a local junior high class as well as to provide a resources for other teachers to utilize if they would like. Therefore, below are 5 suggested homework assignments that will encourage students to not only utilize the information and resources presented on this site but will encourage them to explore and research other issues facing the environment in China.

Please take the quiz once as US citizen, then as a Chinese citizen, and lastly of a citizen of a country of your choosing.  See how they compare in there outcomes be honest!  Fill out the table below with the approximations of the number of acres that it takes to support you and your lifestyle in the various categories.

China has experienced dramatic changes in government and social standards within decades. In 1958-61 China experienced the Great Leap Forward. The aim was to use China’s massive population to transform the nation from an agrarian economy into a modern communist society. Research the Great Leap Forward and write a 1 page overview of the motives and techniques used by the Chinese leadership to reach their goal.               

After having a basic understanding of the Great Leap Forward in China you may begin to see correlations between the past and present. Even though the advancement in technology has modernized much of China’s industry many similarities exist. Compare and Contrast 5 similarities and 5 differences of the Great Leap Forward and China Today.

Often Times Finding a solution to problems such as those concerning the environment requires the awareness of the general population and those who have the potential to make a difference. Create a poster that features a collage of images that portray environmental or health concerns in China to display to raise awareness of the issue.

The dust storms that originate in the Gobi Desert of China get blow half way across the plant due to winds in the atmosphere.  Research and map the specific effects various forms of air pollution can have not only on the regions they originate but all parts of the globe they may effect.
